Stress Awareness in the Workplace – April and Beyond
April marked Stress Awareness Month, providing an important opportunity for organisations to reflect on how they support employee wellbeing and manage work-related stress.
At C&C Consulting, we know that protecting mental health in the workplace isn’t just about compliance; it’s about creating safer, healthier and more productive working environments where people can thrive.
The @Health and Safety Executive (HSE) recently reinforced this message through its Working Minds campaign, including practical guidance from Principal Inspector @Jenny Skeldon on what employers can expect during inspections and how businesses can proactively reduce stress risks
The guidance highlights the six key areas linked to work-related stress:
✔️ Demands
✔️ Control
✔️ Support
✔️ Relationships
✔️ Role
✔️ Change
These factors form the foundation of HSE’s Management Standards approach and should be central to every organisation’s risk management strategy.
The HSE also emphasised the importance of strong leadership through the “5 Rs” approach:
🔹 Reach out
🔹 Recognise
🔹 Respond
🔹 Reflect
🔹 Make it Routine
Embedding these principles into day-to-day operations can help organisations move beyond reactive wellbeing initiatives and build a genuine culture of support.
One of the most effective tools available to employers is HSE’s Stress Indicator Tool (SIT), an anonymous online survey designed to help organisations understand the root causes of workplace stress and identify where improvements are needed. Used correctly, it can provide valuable insight as part of a wider stress risk assessment process.
At C&C Consulting, we continue to see mental health and wellbeing becoming a core part of modern health and safety management. Increasingly, organisations are recognising that psychological health should sit alongside physical safety as a key business priority.
There are some practical steps organisations can take that will make a significant difference to both employee wellbeing and organisational performance. These include:
• conducting stress risk assessments
• consulting with employees
• improving communication and support mechanisms
• training managers to identify early signs of stress
• reviewing workloads and working practices
Creating a positive safety culture is about more than policies and procedures; it’s about people.
As trusted health and safety consultants supporting businesses across multiple sectors, C&C Consulting works closely with organisations to develop practical, proportionate approaches that strengthen compliance while supporting workforce wellbeing and long-term resilience.
Stress awareness should not stop at the end of April. The conversation around mental health, wellbeing and workplace support must continue throughout the year.
